When I’m hired for a lifestyle newborn session, I’m typically photographing the session in the first week or two after the new baby’s arrival. In the case of early spring 2020 babies, a big ol’ wrench was thrown in those plans. Because of the stay at home orders and for general safety precautions, the previously planned lifestyle newborn session turned into a summertime lifestyle family session. I’ve photographed these sessions with older babies before and you know what? There are some benefits to waiting.
Bringing home a new family member requires time for adjustment. There’s a whole new human home with lots of needs, leaving less time for things like making your home photo-ready, or getting your outfit, hair and makeup the way you like it.
On top of that, lots of moms have to have surgery to get the baby here, which can add complications to postpartum life for some. For others, there’s postpartum swelling! Lots of first time moms don’t know to expect this, but waiting a couple of weeks (or three) can help you feel more like yourself, and more confident in front of the camera.
All in all, waiting worked out well for this cute crew and lots of my other families as well. Enjoy some of my favorites from their session.
